Charles Deer III, an eccentric hotel magnate and multi-millionaire, recently passed away. Although the cause of his demise is still unknown, Deer's business partners are already dying to start dividing up his vast pool of assets. Unfortunately, according to the Deer legal team, they'll have to wait their turn.
In his will, Deer left very specific instructions about how his assets were to be awarded. Not willing to let his greedy rivals take all that he had built, Deer liquidated the bulk of his assets and concocted a plan to give it away to a group of complete strangers. Of all the people invited, only those who succeed at Deer's special contest will be allowed to attend the official reading of the will, in which Deer's assets will be divided among them.
However, those strangers are about to find out that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity doesn't come cheap. In fact, the price for entry into this contest may be greater than any of them could have ever known...
Rules:
Okay, so this is a bit of a departure from my usual RP ideas. Some parts of this are going to remain a mystery for now. The whole point is to see how well everyone can think on their feet. Anything not covered in this post will be elaborated on later during the RP.
Characters:
All characters are people who were invited to take part in the contest. Players may rp a character of any age and nationality, though a poor or middle-class background is preferred. There are a couple rules:
- Only one character per person. For this scenario, it's actually best to have relatively few people in the room.
- Real-world setting. Nothing sci-fi or fantasy. Just ordinary people.
- No fancy gear, even if it exists in real life. All players in the contest enter the lodge with nothing but what they would be carrying on them on an average day of their life. You can choose to enter with nothing but the clothes on your back. Otherwise, your personal inventory needs to be OK'd before the rp starts.
- No richies. The whole idea was to have people who'd love the chance to win big riches. So naturally, anyone who's already loaded would never be invited in the first place.
- No military. Sorry.
- Characters are supposed to be ordinary people, but may possess up to 2 real-world skills that may be of help to them in the contest. This is your chance to get creative; pretty much anything a normal human being can do is likely to be OK'd for a skill, so have fun with this part. It's your chance to personalize your character, as well as give them a better chance of survival.
And before I go further, let me make it clear: People. Will. Die.
Actions and Passage of Time
We'll play this by ear. In general, the passage of time in the rp will correspond with the number/frequency of posts over time, so I ask that people avoid posting more than once or twice a day so others don't get left behind.
Chance/Uncertainty:
Any actions that require skill, smarts, or just dumb luck on the part of the character require a check to succeed. When doing anything that isn't a guaranteed success, players should phrase it as such. IE: "I try to kick down the door.", not "I kick down the door! Booyah!"
Toward the end of each day, I'll make randomized "skill checks" for everyone and post the results. The outcomes are based on random chance, balanced against the character's skills and the amount of time and energy devoted to the action. There may be some minor fudging, but you'll basically have to trust me to give everyone fair results.
As is the goal of most GMs, I'm eager to see everyone die. But while your characters are flesh and blood, they can't die outright. A good character deserves a good death, right? Should you fail an action or fail to react to some circumstance that could kill you, the character will instead sustain a minor injury or just have a "near-death" experience. They will, however, be given one 'strike'. It's baseball rules: 3 strikes, and you're out.
The Fruit Cart Rule
I doubt we'll have a problem with this, but just in case, I'll include it. This is a game; regardless of what everyone's characters do and say in-character, out-of-character everyone should be polite and respectful of others. This is meant to be fun, right?
If we have a problem with people spoiling everyone's fun, I can and will assign your character strikes as a penalty. If you're a complete dick, I'll kill your character immediately, no matter how absurd or out-of-genre it may seem for them to die at that time. You've been warned; let's play nice, kids.
So, those are the basics. If I forgot to mention anything, please point it out.
