The year is 2319, humanity has long since broken away from the confines of it's home planet, Earth, and situated itself in the almost limitless confines of the Milky way. Many of the Raw materials of humanity's stations and settlements come from Asteroid mining and from nearby non hospitable planets and planetoids.
In this new age travel between planets light years away is as common place as travel between countries and continents was in the 20th and 21st centuries on Earth thanks to a multi dimensional Ripdrive, created by James Judson Kent in the beginnings of the 22nd century, and 'perfected' in the latter 2200's. This Drive was a entirely new direction in intergalactic travel, allowing a ship, or ships in the early days, to rip through our universe's dimensional folds, escaping the confines of Time and Space as we know it, turning hundreds of light years to months as the norm, the most being a year.
This new technology allowed a successful Mars settlement to blossom into a intergalactic community, a grand colonization race ensued after the Drive's development, major companies backing colony's and raising their stock.
To the chagrin of many there was little to no evidence found of intelligent life in the galaxy, other than humans, save long forgotten ruins on many a planet, evidence would soon state a possibility of a large Intergalactic, maybe even interstellar community, however there is little to show of it now.
Beginning in 2302 the military and private companies began charted out farther and farther, eventually getting to the galactic rim, the last bastion of light before Dark Space, the space between galaxy's.
Travel between Galaxies had never been attempted because of the navcomputer's needs for a set destination star, something that can not be found in Dark space. However this has been 'solved' and travel between two galaxies of begun to be attempted, many ships becoming MIA or found on the Rim, float DIS (Dead In Space) with it's crew dead or vented out into the vacuum.
The Astulite company is currently one of the most well known mining and station fabrication companies, having well over 200 stations, both mining and settlement, out floating in the void. One such Station is the mining settlement in the Cree system, a station that is more akin to the bustling cities of the 21st century.
It's crew is made up of both civilian's and Astulite miners, it;s many decks allowing even the most exploring children to roam without much danger.
It has it's own policing force as well, made up of settler transcripts and former military personel, the armaments have changed little since the 22nd the majority of weaponry being 'slug throwers', as plasma weaponry has been deemed overly dangerous, to friend, operator, and foe alike.
Mining equipment is made up of plasma cutter's, which resemble 21st century style long rifles and over sized knuckle weapons, though the power output on them is kept well within safe ranges, these are the personal plasma cutters however.
The cutters used by industrial mechs and droids however are more powerful, allowing them to blast through tough rock and stone in many-a asteroid core, these resemble the old 'flamethrowers' from Earth War 1, renamed in 2250 with the first interplanetary war, these machines however require constant power production, thus making them unwieldy and dangerous for human operation.
:Setting:
It was a week ago the tattered ship from the rim docked with us, we received a distress signal while en route to the Cree system.
We got no responses from the crew when we attempted contact, looking back now its more than easy enough to see why. A crew docked the ship with the station and entered the ship to investigate.
They only just managed to make it out alive, all of the survivor's badly injured. Reports stated madness from what remained of the ship's crew, vicious and violent actions towards the rescue crew, biting, scratching and pummeling is what they met.
That wasn't the worst part of it, the men and women that attacked them, they were, different, their skin was rotten and would fall off to the touch, some were missing large chunks of themselves, by all rights they shouldn't have been alive, much less up and moving.
We jettisoned the ship ASAP into the nearest star, it should be arriving bout now to be frank, however that wasn't the end.
We were never equipped for any kind of rioting, or even an armed assault, nor were we ready for one. The survivors quickly fell to their injury's many dieing that very night, the thing is, they didn't stay dead, now that I think about it, it reminds me of the lost Astulite colony back in the 22nd, aft and rumors of 'living dead' being attributed to it's disappearance.
I'm rambling now though, like I said, they didn't stay dead, like something out of a bad horror vid, the....things started attacking and devouring the hospice staff on call, those that survived long enough to escape fell to their injuries, much like the rescue survivor's, starting the clinic massacre over again, in the main living rings and levels.
God, if only we weren't so sure of our safety out here, we would have been able to at least put up some kind of quarantine, eventually the entire station was overrun within the past week, I managed to lock myself in here, but I can hear em out there, god knows if anyone will ever find this recording, if yah watchin this, whoever you are..........stay away from the armory, its been rigged to explode, some pure bastard wanted to go out with a bang, thankfully these things haven't been that way, or else I would be breathed vacuum.
Oh sh*t! They're gettin in, whatever you do, to whoever finds this, theres a Ripdrive equipped escape shuttle on the lower levels of the station, I don't know if it's still there, but it can get you to safely.
*In the distance the door breaks down with a loud boom, the rotting people storming into the room, the man screams as they over take him. In a valiant effort he hits the broadcast button, sending the message all through out the stations vid network, any survivors near a vid screen would see it*

We all know em, we all abide by em, do so or die a horrible death by fruit cart.
Set in the future, I'll be lenient on tech because of it, but no powered exoskeletons of any form, weaponry is described above, the most accessible weaponry would be firearms and the low powered plasma cutters, which are capable of burning through a humans skull, provided they stay still enough for a second or two.
The objective of every survivor still alive is the shuttle craft believed to be on the lower levels, keep this in mind, the armory is inaccessible as well because of the rigging, the result explosion would all but tear the station in half, the result protocols trapping the survivors.
