Metallica's come a long way since their sloppily revolutionizing Kill 'Em All debut. Now four years from the lackluster but tolerably catchy St. Anger album, the ninth as of yet untitled studio album--produced by Rick Rubin (Slayer, Johnny Cash, System of a Down, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin park)-- is set for a late 2007 release and promises to be a piece more in touch to their long dormant 80's roots.
Additionally, as quoted by lead guitarist Kirk Hammet on Answers.com--
Since 2006, Metallica's debuted two new songs, provisionally dubbed "The New Song [Death Is Not The End]" and "The Other New Song [Vulturous]", respectively. Though played numerous times throughout their current tour, I've heard rumors that it's been slated in interviews by band members that one or both songs may not appear on the album, which is set to have a grand total of 14 songs (selected from out of around 25).

The Other New Song (a punk-like song live by /M\ETALLIC/A\)

These last three are rumored to be Metallica songs as well, though extremely unlikely from the way I hear the style of the way the songs are played. Still, they's some bombass riffs, though.
?1 (kinda like a mix between "Fight Fire With Fire" and "Battery")

but a lot of the music has an eastern harmonic flair to it, a harmonic minor flair to it, and when I say harmonic minor, that could be construed as like eastern sounding or Middle Eastern sounding or maybe Arabic?
