What do you guys think? I've been hearing a lot about this, as I'm sure everyone has, though personally I don't put a lot of stock into it. Just doesn't seem like it'll get bad to me.
There's always the possibility of a zombie-related mutation, though.

Don't buy into the hype. The hypochondriacs of the world get us worked up over a new flu strain every year. Bottom line: you're not really at risk unless you're really old, really young or have an immune disorder. But if you want to be safe, you don't need to be wearing masks or any crazy crap like that. Just wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating, and avoid that guy at work who still doesn't know how to cover his mouth when he coughs.
I saw on the news that Europe has reported somewhere on the order of 5 deaths from the disease so far. Hell, more people are killed each year by actual pigs.

www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20090429/cdc-confirms-first-swine-flu-death-us?src=RSS_PUBLICSee? The very first death in the US, and it's a 22-month old child. Dude, any disease that can't kill a baby should be ashamed of itself. You know, they had all this hubbub about bird flu, too. But that wasn't serious outside of Asia. And now this, the flu that's centered in Mexico apparently. Hey, not to sound mean, but it's not as though those places couldn't stand to lose a couple people. In fact, I kind of hope it does spread a little. This could be a cure for unemployment in disguise.

Completely overblown as of the moment of writing. The regular flu kills more people than Swine Flu. Hell I can't even get it from eating bacon... and yet no one wants to eat pork. So if you excuse me, I have some pork to buy up on the cheap all barter style.

I agree with pretty much all of you, but I see a lot of people getting really worked up. For example, I know a guy who thinks it's all a government conspiracy (though this is no the first insane theory I've heard from him).
But yeah, just like SARS and the bird flu, nothin much is gonna come of this.

The common flu bug kills 16,000 Americans a year, granted, most of those being elderly, immuno-compromised individuals, and infants. The hype about this bug is due to it's virulence (persistance) and how quickly it runs it's course from infection to resolution. The thing that scares people is the fact that this strain can infect birds and pigs, something previous influenza strains have had difficulty crossing over to.
The CDC has declared a Level 5 (out of 6) epidemic because it has spread to over 15 countries, despite only 5081 confirmed case in existance. Only one death has been confirmed so compared to other flu strains this one is a bit of a puss. Still, Tamiflu is still being used to vaccinate/treat it and supplies of this exist in the tens of millions of individual dose vials.
As always, good handwashing and being conscious of potential infection routes is as always the best defense. This isn't the one that's going to get us.

My dad's freaking out about it and is applying it to the cause of all our problems and to nonsensically coax all of us into doing whatever he wants.
("We have to go to church early and get a seat because if we don't, we'll get swine flu") ("You can only smoke on the balcony, and since theres mosquitoes on the balcony, you can't smoke anymore")
Etc.
